NIGERIAN SURGEONS SEPARATE 4-MONTH OLD CONJOINED TWINS

A team of Nigerian surgeons have successfully separated four-month-old twins conjoined at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola, Adamawa state.
According to Auwal Abubakar, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, speaking at a news conference in Yola, the operation which took four hours to perform, was conducted on May 14.
“We had a successful operation of conjoined female twins (omphilopagus). The development was recorded following a team work from different medical units,” he said.
Abubakar added that the twins have an “excellent” chance of survival.
He also called for more efforts to reduce the rate of medical tourism in the country, adding that Nigerian doctors are capable of competing with their counterparts in developed countries if given the necessary support.
“We must do well and reduce the number of people about to ask seeking medical treatment,” he said.
This feat brings to two the number of successful cases of such surgery carried out in the hospital.
