The Senate president and the Senate leader intervened in the call for impeachment which was made by Senator Mathew Uroghide - Bukola Saraki referred the motion to Judiciary and Legal Committee for advice based on the submission of Senator Na’allah
At the plenary on Thursday, April 26, members of the Senate called for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over $496 million unapproved spending on 12 Tucano aircraft.
The call for the impeachment was cited in a motion raised by a Senator representing Delta south Mathew Uroghide and seconded by Senator Chukwuma Utazi.
However, the call for the president's impeachment suffered a setback when the Senate president Bukola Saraki and the deputy Senate leader Ibn Bala Na'allah intervened.
The Senate president while speaking on Uroghide's point of order referred the motion to Judiciary and Legal Committee for advice based on the submission of Senator Na’allah.
Uroghide said President Buhari's directive for the withdrawal of $496 million for acquisition of military aircraft without an approval from the National Assembly was illegal.
Urogide said President Buhari’s move was a violation of the constitution and thus, he should face the consequences. The Senator urged President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, to allow the chamber to invoke Section 143 of the Constitution.
